UK prepper builds 250-day food supply over concerns about solar storms

A British prepper has accumulated approximately 250 days’ worth of emergency food supplies because of concerns about the possible effects of a major solar storm.

Mike, who is known online as the UK Urban Prepper, described his preparations in an interview with The Independent published on 26 August 2026.

The 42-year-old said he started prepping around eight years ago, initially because of concerns about a powerful solar event affecting electricity and communications infrastructure.

His supplies include tinned food and rations intended to help him manage an extended period of disruption.

Could a solar storm affect everyday services?

Solar storms are caused by activity on the Sun. Some involve coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which release large quantities of charged particles into space.

When conditions are right, these events can disturb the Earth’s magnetic field.

Particularly strong geomagnetic storms can affect satellites, radio communications and electricity networks, although the severity of any disruption depends on several factors.

Solar activity is routinely monitored by scientific organisations, including the Met Office Space Weather Operations Centre.

How much emergency food is necessary?

Mike’s 250-day supply reflects his own assessment of the risks. It is considerably more than the basic household supplies recommended by the Government.

For those who want to prepare for shorter interruptions to services, a modest stock of non-perishable food, drinking water, a torch and a battery-powered or wind-up radio can be a useful starting point.

Food storage also requires some planning. Products should be kept in suitable conditions, checked regularly and used before they expire.

The Government provides further advice through its Prepare website.

Although major solar storms are a recognised natural hazard, there is no indication from forecasters that a severe event is imminent. Most solar activity has little or no noticeable effect on everyday life.
