UK preppers share practical ways to prepare for everyday emergencies

From keeping extra food in the cupboard to growing vegetables, members of a UK prepping community are sharing ways to make their households better prepared for unexpected events.

The UK Preppers Club, which has nearly 15,000 members, was featured in The Independent on 22 September 2026.

The community is run by Ana, a mother from South Wales, who has built up around two months’ worth of food supplies for her household.

Her approach focuses on everyday preparedness rather than elaborate survival equipment.

Preparing without spending a fortune

Among the ideas shared within the community are buying a few extra tins or packets of regularly used food, rotating supplies to avoid waste and growing food where space allows.

Keeping a small reserve of household essentials can be useful if shopping becomes difficult because of illness, transport problems or severe weather.

It can also make sense financially, provided people buy products they will actually use and avoid accumulating more than they need.

The Independent’s report also highlighted the involvement of women in prepping communities, including those managing household supplies and planning for their families.

A changing picture of prepping

Prepping is sometimes associated with underground bunkers and long-term survival plans, but not everyone interested in the subject takes that approach.

For some households, it simply means having enough food and other essentials available to get through a short period of disruption.

The Government’s Prepare website also encourages households to keep basic emergency supplies and make plans for unexpected events.

While membership of online prepping communities shows interest in the subject, there is no reliable figure for how many people in the UK currently identify as preppers.
