When such a respectable and respected magazine as US-based The Federalist declares that prepping is the only smart strategy you know you know you have been keeping good company and been following the correct path all along.
American Preppers
According to a story in The Federalist on the 10th of April 2021, there are now around 3.7 million active preppers in the United States alone.
These are among the very few people there, argues the magazine, that were in any way prepared for the hit and miss rounds of successive lockdowns in the country most affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
These were also the people who best survived February’s extraordinary winter storms in the state of Texas, which left upwards of 4 million of its inhabitants without power, heat, or access to drinking water or food supplies for days at a time. Plummeting temperatures in the freak winter storms left roads covered in ice and residents struggling to survive. Indeed, says the story, more than 111 Americans met their deaths through vehicle crashes, house fires, carbon monoxide poisoning, or hypothermia.
Revising the Stereotype
The article goes on to explain how even the more conservative “legacy” press is being forced to revise past stereotypes about preppers as gun-crazed doomsday merchants with a worldview fit for ridicule.
On the contrary, the disruption of the coronavirus and the chaos of power failures and water shortages in Texas has gone to show that prepping is the only logical solution to fractured supply chains during emergencies that neither government nor private industry can easily or rapidly mend.
Events of the past year have demonstrated that far from being a fringe preoccupation of weird social outcasts prepping is a strategy to be pursued by every smart-thinking individual. If you gather the appropriate knowledge and equipment around you, you too might be in a better position to survive the unexpected. With your own stockpiles of water and food, you too may be able to survive for days on end without immediate access to electricity, central heating, or water from the tap.
Prepping is about creating the right kind of mindset that – one that keeps you one step ahead of the game when it comes to responding to emergencies, disasters and setbacks that arrive on your doorstep without a moment’s notice. In those situations, prepping is the only smart strategy to have adopted – prepping is for every smart person.
Prepping – The Basics
Your foundation in prepping is likely to focus on stockpiling food and water.
Your supplies should be sufficient for at least three days and, ideally, as long as two weeks or more, suggests The Federalist.
When putting together those stores, it might help to determine what and how much you need with a daily meal plan. That also helps to keep everything within bounds. Your stockpile of food and water after all is a valuable asset designed to help you in an emergency and not something designed to drive you into debt or bankrupt you.
So, you can start small. A little at a time. Just a few pounds a week. But spent regularly, over a longer period of time, is likely to result in a well-stocked food cupboard and water reservoir.
Alongside your stockpile of food and water at home, also assemble and pack a “bug out bag” to keep in the car or to take with you at a moment’s notice if the disaster or emergency means that you quickly need to leave your usual place of safety.
