You’ve got all the prepper kit that you need – perhaps you have a bug out bag (also known more commonly in the UK as a grab bag), dried food, water supplies, medicines etc. But that isn’t the end of it. This brief blog provides tips on what you need to consider now you have your prepper kit.
Where is your kit?
Make sure you know where your kit is. You may have collected items over a period of time and put them in different places around your home / car or even somewhere outside.
Firstly, gather all the items you need for an emergency. This is everything from essential tools, batteries, candles, torches, solar powered radio, clothing, shelter, medicines etc. Put it all in one place.
Not sure what you need? Then please check out our blog: Survival Equipment Kit: What Do I Need? for ideas of what you may need in your kit.
Where are you going to keep it all?
You may decide to have several kits – one for indoors, a grab bag (either in your car and/or indoors) and perhaps something (or several kits) cached outside. We have various blogs on our website that discusses these options and considerations in more depth:
The key here is to remember where your kit/s are and that they are in a safe, waterproof place. Don’t store them in a damp cellar or loft, for example as they will attract mould etc.
If you are storing your kit in an out-building, make sure the building is airtight and waterproof, and most importantly, accessible. If it floods, for example, would you be able to reach the outbuilding?
How much space you have will also impact on how much you store. If space is extremely limited, for example, you may choose to just have a bug out bag for every member of your family, and some pet supplies.
Know how to work your kit
It’s great to have your prepper kit but it is important that you do know how to use the items within it.
Check that any items do work – batteries may have gone flat, or something may need replacing.
Ensure you also understand how they work. Do you need instructions? For example, you may have bought a swiss army knife but don’t actually know what tools are in it – so familiarise yourself.
Do you need batteries or another power source?
Go through your kit and feel confident everything is working and you know how to use it.
Successful storage
Make sure you store your kit in different group types – this will make it easier to find what you need. For example:
- Store batteries, power sources, torches, candles, matches etc. in one group
- Medicines and first aid supplies should be in another group
- Put food and water supplies together
- Protective clothing can be another category
- Camping and survival equipment can go together
- Pets’ stuff can all go together
Put the kit in to categories that make sense to you.
Finally …
… regularly check your kit – especially things like water purification tablets and dried food – to make sure nothing has expired.
